Shocking footage has been captured of a tyre flying off a racing car and striking a volunteer at a popular event at Avalon Raceway.

Volunteer injured at Avalon Raceway

A volunteer was struck by a flying tyre after it broke away from a racing car at a popular Lara event.

The incident occurred at Avalon Raceway during the Sprintcar C-Main on Friday night.

It is believed a tyre from racer Brenten Farrer’s car tore free from his vehicle and flew into the spectator compound.

It struck a volunteer of the track who was bowled over and caught by other nearby spectators.

Shocking video footage, posted on social media, captured the moment the tyre fell loose from the vehicle, roaring its way through the fence and towards the crowd.
Screams could be heard from onlookers as the tyre took multiple bounces before the hitting the man.

Avalon Raceway Speedway operations manager David Mills said the incident involved “a part failure”.

“Most importantly all involved are in good health today and have been contacted via venue management,” he said.

“One person involved, a longstanding and highly valued Avalon Raceway volunteer, was treated on scene before being able to be assisted for further observation at one of the venues first aid rooms.

“Medical staff were able to complete all necessary checks before allowing the patron to be released into the care of family and friends, who we also thank for providing transport home to the gentlemen concerned.”

A second person affected required no treatment.

Mr Mills said a review into the on‑track procedures and the height of the catch fence was underway.

“Moving forward Avalon Raceway will continue its review of the incident, implementing change as required to avoid another incident of this nature, while also continuing to provide high level motorsport entertainment with the total understanding that motorsport racing can be dangerous,” he said.

The event was paused while organisers patched up the affected parts of the fence before resuming shortly after.
