Georgia Love has tearfully spoken of her heartbreak after the breakdown of her marriage to Lee Elliott.
Love and Elliott, who met on the 2016 season of The Bachelorette, were married for four years before separating.
Speaking for the first time, Love said the overwhelming emotion was one of feeling like she’d let down her followers and fans.
“That’s been a big part of what has been difficult about making the public announcement that we have decided to separate because I don’t want to feel like I’ve let anyone down, which is so silly because it’s not about anyone else. It’s just about us,’’ Love told Kate Langbroek on Mamamia’s No Filter podcast.
“But people have been so wonderful, following our story along since the start and I feel … sorry I’m getting teary about this because it’s so silly because it’s not about anyone else. But so many people say often that they look at our relationship and feel like that gives them hope.”
“That they’ll find their person. I’ve been very sad about feeling like I’ve let people down or we’ve let people down. We very much believe in love. We have not fallen out of love, there has always been deep love there but I don’t want people to be disappointed.”
She added: “The thing is, it did work. We met on a reality TV show. We fell in love.
We got married and we’ve spent the most incredible years together. That’s not a failure of the relationship. It’s not another Bachelor couple has failed. I don’t see it as a failure at all.”
Love revealed her mum passed away the day after The Bachelorette finale and she lost her job after being ‘cancelled’ in 2021 for an offensive social media post.
She said it was all compounding grief and difficult again to enter “such an emotionally hard time”. She paid tribute to Elliott for his support.
“We’ve agreed to separate, but there’s certainly no paperwork or anything done and that takes a long time anyway,’’ she said.
“Leigh and I were together for nine years and married for four, so it’s not just an ex, you know.
“I don’t think he’ll ever feel like my ex-husband.
“I think we will always be very connected. We’ve shared such a beautiful life together.
“I feel so, so, so lucky and grateful for that. We’ve gone through a lot in our nine years, individually and as a couple, and we’ve had the most wonderful time together as well. So, I’ll never look back on our time together as an ex relationship or something that I completely move on from. That’s very much part of my life story and always will be.”
Love and Elliott both posted about their split with a statement on their social media in February.
“It was very hard at the end of last year with all the speculation about whether we had split,’’ she said.
“It was hard while I was trying to come to terms with what was happening.
“Lee and I made the decision together but it doesn’t mean it makes me happy. It doesn’t, I’m really sad about it.”
