Two dead after shooting at Wreck Beach in Victoria’s southwest

Two bodies have been found on an isolated track at Wreck Beach in Victoria’s southwest after a shooting. But police say at this stage, the deaths are not being treated as suspicious.

Two bodies have been found on an isolated track on the state’s southwest coast after a shooting.

Police are at the scene in Gellibrand Lower where the pair was found at 10.45am Friday.

A passer-by on a walking track near Wreck Beach came across the double tragedy.

A Victoria Police statement said they were yet to be formally identified.

“The circumstances surrounding the deaths are yet to be determined,” the statement said.

“Officers have cordoned off the area and a crime scene has been established.”

“At this early stage, police are not treating either death as suspicious.

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner.”

Police said they were not searching for anyone else in relation to the incident.

It is believed a gun was found at the scene.

Deep in heavy, rugged bush land, investigators could be seen coming and going along Moonlight Head Rd on Friday afternoon.

Two members of Parks Victoria are manning a roadblock a few hundred meters from the scene, marshalling wayward tourists who have been trying to access Wreck Beach.

Rural properties are dotted around the parkland.

Officers remained at the scene late on Friday as the sun started to set over Wreck Beach.

Police tape could be seen cordoning off the beginning of a trail at Wreck Beach car park.

It is understood police have been unable to contact the next of kin of the deceased.

One local farmer, who did not wish to be named, said he first realised something was wrong when he saw police vehicles zooming past his quaint property early on Friday.

“A helicopter was flying by, but it’s long gone now”, the man said.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said paramedics were called to the scene in Gellibrand Lower on Friday, but referred any further questions to police.

A resident in the area, who wished not to be identified, said they heard emergency services screaming past their home just after 11am.

A prominent Apollo Bay businessman, who did not want to be named, said he was stunned by the news.

“Absolutely shocking,” he said.

“This kind of thing does not happen down here.

“We have no idea what has happened yet but it doesn’t sound good.”Another man, who works at the Apollo Bay Hotel, 60 minutes east of Wreck Beach, said he could hear multiple emergency services “whizzing past” this morning.

“We heard the sirens and saw ambulances,” he said.

Wreck Beach does feature as a stage of the Great Ocean Road Walk and features as part of the ‘Day Two’ trail.

According to their website, the “hidden gem” is nestled between treacherous coastline and thick bushland.
