Two drivers are in hospital and a horse has reportedly been injured in a serious multi-vehicle collision on the West Gate Freeway.

It’s understood a 4WD towing a horse float collided with a car and a truck on the freeway between Montague and Power streets about 12.10pm on Saturday.

The drivers of both cars were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The truck driver was not injured.

A woman was transported to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition and a man in his 30s was also transported to the Alfred Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The woman remained in a critical but stable condition on Saturday evening.

One thoroughbred being transported in the float were withdrawn from its race at Caulfield following the collision.

Racing Victoria Stewards confirmed on X that Salsa Fellow had been scratched due to a transport incident.

Broadcaster Andrew Bensley said the horse sustained grazes and swelling over both eyes and said vet clearance was required before a return to the track.

Salsa Fellow is trained by Henry Dwyer, who is currently overseas, at his stables in Ballarat and St Leonards.

The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined.

The inbound lanes of the Westgate Freeway reopened just after 4.45pm — nearly five hours after the crash took place.

The stretch of road between the Burnley Tunnel and Montague St exit had been completely shut off so emergency services could remove the vehicles and conduct investigations.

A spokesperson from the Department of Transport and Planning said delays were expected to ease on the freeway and surrounding streets in Southbank and South Melbourne.
