Time On is your wrap-up of all the footy gossip and banter.
Footy great Jonathan Brown has lashed the media for being too “shit scared” to have a crack at St Kilda coach Ross Lyon.
Brown said the Saints have escaped scrutiny — as Luke Hodge also alluded to on The Agenda Setters.
“Ross Lyon, the super coach, never won a premiership,’’ Brown said from Las Vegas with Kayo and Fox Sports for the boxing.
“They’re very close to Essendon on the ladder, (Essendon coach) Brad Scott cops heaps of shit but St Kilda sort of gets away with it because of the Ross Lyon aura. All the journalists are shit scared of Ross Lyon. Should he be coming under more heat?”
Brown and Campbell Brown were debating the topic on Browny’s Podcast.
Hodge took a swipe at his Channel 7 colleague and Saints great Nick Riewoldt for not being more critical.
“I thought Nick would’ve went a lot harder at Ross (considering) the fact that he was going at Brett Ratten when they were sitting 10th,’’ Hodge said.
“We have a list that should be better than where we really are. Brett Ratten three years ago was copping it from all their former players.”
Riewoldt hit back this week.
“Hodgey and I are fine. I understand where he was coming from, he’s worked with Brett Ratten in the past,’’ Riewoldt said.
“He’d drilled down into the facts. To suggest that Ross Lyon and Brett Ratten had the same list essentially... is complete rubbish. Ross had the same list for one year and made finals and then realised that list could go no further. Anyone who doesn’t think St Kilda are in a rebuild just hasn’t done the work, doesn’t realise what they’ve actually done. I’m ok with the direction.”
Joel Selwood to return to commentary box
Joel Selwood will return to footy commentary this Sunday.
The Geelong legend has been on leave since the sudden death of his brother Adam in May at age 41.
It came just three months after his twin brother Troy Selwood died at 40 years old.
The AFL world has been rocked by the tragedies — both Adam and Troy were two of four Selwood brothers — along with Scott — to play in the AFL.
Joel, who has just returned from a family trip to Bali, posted a tribute to Adam with a heartbreaking caption: “Rest up, love you brother. Look after each other.”
He finished it off with a love heart and two dove emojis.
Selwood will be part of the Channel 7 commentary team for the St Kilda v Melbourne match at Marvel Stadium.
‘My kids made me’: Fev joins Legends line-up
Brendan Fevola is the latest big name to join the Legends Game on August 28.
Fevola, star goalkicker for Carlton and Brisbane, will team up alongside Luke Hodge and Gary Ablett Jr for Victoria in the match at Marvel Stadium.
He said his children encouraged him to pull on the boots again to raise funds for prostate cancer.
“I wasn’t originally going to play, you get older and I didn’t want to fail, but my kids made me,’’ Fevola said.
Also playing are Cyril Rioli for the All Stars team, coached by Shane Crawford with Nick Riewoldt as captain. Social media sensation Dan Gorringe will also line up for the All Stars.
Billy Brownless lays blame for viral ‘fat dipping’ flick
Billy Brownless has laid the blame squarely on his partner Crystle Fleur for his viral skinny dipping picture.
The footy larrikin said it was his glamorous partner who came up with the idea to upload a picture of him in the pool at the Cable Beach Club Resort.
The picture showing Brownless from behind with the caption “Some call it ‘Skinny Dipping’ I like to call it ‘Fat Dipping’” was the talk of his colleagues on Triple M’s Saturday Rub.
“Guess who took the photo — Crystle,’’ Brownless said.
“She thought it was fun. I was just paddling around in the pool, splashing around. She said I’ve got a shot here for you. Darl, we’ll get rid of those shorts and we’ll just have a bit of fun with it. And she thought it would be funny to go nude. She knows how to post off my account. 120,000 views, the punters loved it.”
Brownless said his four children weren’t so fond of the holiday snap.
“They’re the ones who aren’t so happy,’’ he said.
“Ruby is the most outspoken, she rang me. She said ‘dad, you’re a dickhead’.”
Montagna hits back at Cornes
Former Saints star Leigh Montagna is the latest to hit back at polarising commentator Kane Cornes.
Montagna accused Cornes of using Chat GPT to air and then criticise his positive take on the Saints — from February — which he is adamant he didn’t say.
On Triple M’s Sunday Rub he aired a top five of Cornes’ worst takes of the season.
“It is a complete fabricated quote,’’ Montagna said.
“It is inaccurate, it is made up, it is not a real quote and Kane Cornes has used Chat GPT to do his homework for him. This is what I believe to have happened.
“He’s deliberately typed in my name, ‘I’m going to find a way to take a cheap shot that doesn’t even exist’. If I was petty I would ask for an apology.
“He’s taken a drive by and he’s missed and it’s blown up spectacularly in his face.”
After the segment he said it was all in good spirit.
“Hopefully Kane will hear this and he takes it in the context of what it was,’’ he said.
“It’s a bit of banter. It’s a bit of good spirit, bit of fun. He threw one over the fence at me and I just picked it up and threw it back. There’s no issues between Kane and I, no war, just a bit of fun.
“He’s very good at what he does. He finds content and I think he will take this in the way it was intended, all a bit of fun.”
Stevie Johnson said: “Kane will be down at Aussie Disposals now getting a bit of ammunition.”
Nathan Brown called it “one of the great take-downs you will ever hear. Leigh Montagna v Kane Cornes — it’s a knockout.”
Cornes briefly mentioned it on his SEN breakfast program on Monday morning.
“(Montagna says) I got some opinions but I’m too scared to share them. So hey, then the producer goes ‘what did Kane say three weeks ago at seven o’clock on a Wednesday?’ Why don’t we lead with that.
“I will invoice them again for the amount of content I’m providing which is fascinating to me.”
Kids Call returns
Channel 7’s Kids Call returned on Sunday and it’s been so successful it is set for a third go in Round 22.
Led by Alex Kouts (12), Ned Bolton (14) and Indie Axup (16), the ambitious young footy fans presented their own pre-game and post-match coverage at the Collingwood v Fremantle match at the MCG, guided by caller Jack Heverin and Bulldogs star Cody Weightman.
The next match will be the Hawthorn v Collingwood blockbuster in Round 22 on August 7.
Bolton, son of former Pies assistant coach Brendan Bolton, made an impression with his use of the terms rizz and aura when supported by Collingwood captain Darcy Moore during his first match.
“It’s a bit of fun, Darcy loved it,’’ Bolton said.
“I can’t wait. So much fun to see someone like Nick Daicos in the commentary box — it’s a dream really.”
