Tim Wilson claims ‘almost unbelievable’ win in Goldstein as Zoe Daniel refuses to concede

Tim Wilson said his return as Goldstein MP defied “political gravity” after being “written off” upon losing the seat in 2022. But his teal opponent Zoe Daniel is refusing to concede.

Tim Wilson has remained tight-lipped on whether he would put his hand up for the Liberal leadership team after winning back the bayside seat of Goldstein.

Mr Wilson said he was “written off” after losing the seat to teal MP Zoe Daniel at the 2022 poll but had to “defy political gravity” to turn the seat blue again.

“We are pleased to accept that we have won the seat of Goldstein back for the Liberal Party,” he said.

“To be given that privilege once again is something that is almost unbelievable and I do so very much with a sense of humility and respect for the electorate and of course for the great trust that they have given me.

“It is not my victory, I need to make this crystal clear, it is all of our victory.”

Asked about the leadership speculation, he said: “I have aspirations for one thing, and it

was to have the great privilege and service to be the member for Goldstein again and of course we have lived out that promise”.

“There is a lot of work that we need to do and I’m very proud to be part of a Liberal team that is going to have a lot of work ahead of it,” he said.

The Coalition’s nuclear plan is among policies that are expected to be reviewed as part of the election post-mortem.

Mr Wilson said he believed “in the role of nuclear power” as part of the energy mix and building Australia’s future industrial base.

Earlier on Wednesday, Ms Daniel was refusing to concede defeat saying she wanted to “respect the democratic process”.

“While the media has called the result in Goldstein I will wait for further counting out of respect for my scrutineers and the democratic process,” she said in a statement to Sky.

“This seems sensible given the margin is in the hundreds and there are about 12,000 remaining votes to be counted.”

In a thinly veiled swipe, Mr Wilson said after the 2022 poll he “showed respect” to his supporters by conceding because he thought “it was important to provide a clean slate”.
