A teen thug who was on bail when he helped carry-out a high-profile alleged murder has bragged about being released from youth detention.
The Herald Sun can reveal the teenager, who was originally charged with murder, was freed after pleading guilty to lower level offences over the fatal attack which shocked the state.
They include assisting offender murder, two counts of aggravated burglary, common assault and theft of motor vehicle.
The Herald Sun cannot reveal details of the case for legal reasons.
The teen flaunted his new-found freedom in a video posted to his social media earlier this month, as Premier Jacinta Allan faced renewed pressure to tighten bail laws and crack down on youth crime amid a spate of disturbing home invasions.
The footage showed the teen being escorted out of a youth detention centre by staff members.
He can be seen smiling as he ducks under a garage door carrying two plastic bags that appear to contain clothes.
A female staff member warns a person filming his release to stop.
In a move that has left his former victims furious, the video is posted with rap song, Talk of the Town, which boasts about being the “talk of the country”.
“Man’s way too lit to be walkin’ around, talk of the country, not talk of the town,” the lyrics say.
“Get the drop on an opp, stalkin’ ‘em down.”
The teen offender, who had spent less than 18 months in youth detention, was released under a 16-month youth supervision order.
The order requires underage offenders to attend a youth justice unit and participate in a community service program.
At least eight teenagers have been charged with murder in Victoria in the past two years.
A former victim of the teenager said the video had left her fuming, as she warned the community that they should be afraid.
“The punishment is not fitting the crime,” she said.
“It just makes me sick.”
“He’s flaunting it, he’s boasting with that song.”
The woman, who was too scared to reveal her identity publicly, said she still has trouble sleeping at night.
“The system is beyond a joke,” she said.
It comes just days after the Allan government pushed a new package of bail reforms through parliament in a bid to get tough on crime.
But Shadow Attorney-General Michael O’Brien said Labor’s “weak laws” needed to go further to ensure that the “sentence actually does fit the crime”.
“Despite the Premier claiming that sentencing laws would be reviewed, nothing has happened,” he said.
“Victims of crime have every reason to ask where is the justice? Too many victims of crime feel they are treated like second class citizens compared to offenders.”
