A burger restaurant in Croydon North has been destroyed in a suspicious fire.
Emergency services were called to Rocco’s Burger Cafe on Exeter Rd just after 2am Tuesday following reports of flames and smoke engulfing the restaurant.
There were no occupants in the building at the time.
The neighbouring Australia Post was also badly damaged.
Owner of the site, but not the burger business, Vinit Abbott said he was devastated by the destruction.
“I’m feeling gutted. My wife and I have pretty much worked all our life, and this is our little super nest … our savings. It’s pretty much in ashes now.”
“This is alarming to the community and to us, as well, because I live here. I’ve lived here for 25 years.
“I don’t know why someone would firebomb a cafe, of all places. It doesn’t make sense.”
Forensic investigators arrived at the scene at 10am.
Local Ian Hayward said he was shocked the attack had occurred near his home.
“I watch all these sort of burning places in the western and northern suburbs — I’m amazed it’s happened in our own quiet area,” Mr Hayward said.
“It’s very sad, these sort of things happening.
“It’s a very social area. My daughter — when she visits us — would have lunch there.”
Police urged anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au
