Police hunt driver after mobility scooter hit-and-run fatality

Police are appealing for information following a fatal hit-and-run in Yarraville, where a man on a mobility scooter was killed.

A driver is on the run after a man who was riding a mobility scooter was hit and killed by a vehicle in Yarraville at around 11.30am Wednesday morning.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene after being struck near the intersection of Francis and Ballarat streets.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene and is yet to be located.

There are no available details about what vehicle struck and killed the man at this time.

Locals have taken to social media to slam the intersection where the hit and run occurred, with one even sharing a letter she received from the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DOJCS) denying her request to place a road safety camera there.

“This is a letter I got less than one month ago about the same intersection,” she wrote.

“I am livid. So many locals have complained about how trucks run the red light there. This should have been prevented.”

In the letter the DOJCS said they had “decided not to” install a camera after considering it against a “range of criteria” including engineering factors, environmental suitability and existing enforcement options.

A second person said it wasn’t the first time someone had been struck at the intersection also taking aim at truck drivers.

“This area is a major issue,” Travis Bristow said.

“Truck drivers run the red lights daily and not the first time someone has been hit at this crossing. It is a daily issue, trucks are the issue here. Not the roads, not the people. Trucks.”

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage or any other information that could assist police to contact Crime Stoppers.
