Police fear a man with links to Melbourne’s underworld, who vanished more than a decade ago, has met with foul play.

Detectives fear a man with links to major gangland figures, who vanished more than a decade ago, has been murdered.

Reservoir man Farhad Jamal, 36, has not been seen alive since he was spotted at a South Melbourne supermarket on Market St on April 28, 2009.

His family reported him missing to police 12 years later, in 2021.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said investigators suspected Mr Jamal had met with foul play.

His bank accounts have not been touched since he disappeared.

Mr Jamal, an amateur boxer who once trained at several gyms across the northern suburbs, was “well known” in Melbourne’s Afghan community and was associated with figures in the underworld.

Those associations included links to Mohammad Keshtiar, or “Afghan Ali”, who was gunned down in South Yarra on August 4 last year.

Mr Jamal and Keshtiar were both thrown out of the packed Dome nightclub in Prahran after Keshtiar shot one bouncer in the hip and punched another in the face in 2000, when Mr Jamal was 28 years old.

A court heard at the time that the pair returned to the venue before they got into an argument with the bouncers.

Mohammed ‘Afghan Ali’ Keshtiar was gunned down in South Yarra in 2023.

Keshtiar then opened fire with a .45 calibre gun in front of about 800 patrons.

Mr Jamal allegedly hurled a glass bottle through the air during the assault, shattering a mirror.

The pair, who had once worked as bouncers, were well-known in Melbourne’s club scene and were often seen visiting different venues as patrons.

Both men were Afghan refugees who had worked as bouncers and taxi drivers.

Police charged Mr Jamal with affray, assault and wilful damage, while Keshtiar faced 15 charges ranging from assault to intentional conduct endangering life.

Mr Jamal had a history of violence and firearms offending.

He claimed to have been tortured in his home country as a child by occupying Russian soldiers.

The Missing Persons Squad has been investigating Mr Jamal’s disappearance, which prompted repeated calls for help from his family.
