A unique film festival which showcases those trying to make quality work on a tight budget kicks off in Melbourne next month.
The 11th annual People of Passion International Film Festival will run on May 17 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image at Federation Square.
Festival director Leanne Campbell said it had become a champion for the kind of under-represented voices who might, in some circumstances, use personal savings to fund their work.
She said POPIFF was not like traditional mainstream festivals but was a grassroots event which prioritised diverse storytelling, ethical judging and genuine support for filmmakers.
“It shines a spotlight on often-overlooked genres, including films featuring mature-age actors, works passing the Bechdel Test, First Nations cinema, animation, and science fiction,” Miss Campbell said.
The festival has previously exhibited the work of well-known Australian actors, including Peter O’Brien, and attracted international directors.
Thirty films will be featured with listings available on POPIFF’s website and its Facebook and Instagram pages.
Miss Campbell said POPIFF had continued to flourish in the face of some significant obstacles.
“Despite financial challenges, the festival has survived even through the COVID-19 pandemic, maintaining live screenings. With increased audience numbers and community support, any future profits would be reinvested into expanding the festival,” she said.
“In an industry often dominated by big-budget productions, POP stands as a testament to the power of grassroots filmmaking and the enduring need for fresh, diverse voices in cinema. POPIFF has a particular emphasis on fostering Indigenous talent.”
The festival actively screens top Indigenous films to celebrate their perspectives and cultural contributions.
This initiative helps nurture emerging voices and ensures that under-represented stories are given a platform,” Miss Campbell said.
