Thrill-seeking vandals have targeted another Melbourne icon, plastering the city’s famed Cheese Stick with “Pam the Bird” graffiti.
The signature bird, which varies in colours and sizes, has become an increasing feature on freeways, trains and buildings across Melbourne.
Earlier this year the tag was sprayed on the Flinders Street Station clock tower and heritage-listed Uncle Tobys silo in West Footscray, sparking frustration from business owners and Melbourne’s Lord Mayor.
Images of the graffiti sprawled on the Cheese Stick, a giant yellow sculptural work and roadside attraction over the CityLink in Parkville, were posted to social media on Tuesday.
The artwork was designed by international architecture firm Denton Corker Marshall and installed in 2000.
Users online slammed the vandals for “spoiling” another iconic Melbourne artwork.
“I initially liked spotting Pam artworks because it was more creative than an indecipherable tag. They’re starting to grate though; I’m not a fan of this one. Just feels like it’s spoiling a cool, recognisable piece of art,” one user wrote online.
“Once the Pam artists went after iconic places like the Flinders Street Station clock and the Uncle Toby’s factory I knew they didn’t really give a shit about Melbourne.”
The Herald Sun previously revealed the clean-up bill for the 117-year-old clock was expected to top $24,000 due to the costs associated with engaging a team of abseiling graffiti removalists.
The prolific “Pam the Bird” tag has garnered a cult following on social media, with third party Instagram account @goodbirdart showcasing the graffiti to more than 27,000 followers.
Photos and videos on the page show the daring, yet destructive, tags being spray painted by masked individuals or simply showing the aftermath left behind.
Yarraville man Jack Gibson-Burrell was charged late last year when he was caught spray painting a “Pam the Bird” inside the City Loop.
