Nova FM breakfast host Jase Hawkins has told how a man died in his arms outside his Bayside home after being stabbed in a random knife attack.
Hawkins found the man, Spiros Filidis, 46, lying bleeding on the footpath just meters from his front gate on January 4, 2024.
‘It was a typical Tuesday, we were living in Hampton East at the time … the kids were on school holidays,” Hawkins told his Nova audience on Thursday.
“My wife Lou took one of our sons, Huddy, to the movies and I was home with Felix, who is 11 and Archie who is 3.
“Just after 12 … my wife rang and I could hear it in her voice, just the panic, and she said, ‘hey, I have pulled up just down the road from our gate, there is a man lying in the gutter covered in blood.’
“This is 10 past 12 on a Tuesday.”
Hawkins rushed out of the house.
“At first I thought it was a mannequin, (but) as I approached the person I could see it was a man, he was laying down half on the footpath, half in the gutter and his chest was covered in blood.”
Hawkins’ wife called Triple O and took their children into their home.
“At this point it is just me and this gentleman, there is absolutely no one around,” Hawkins said.
“The poor guy is covered in blood on his chest, he could not really talk, I said, ‘if you can hear me, blink,’ and he did.
“I was just trying to reassure him that help was on the way.”
Hawkins took off his shirt to use it to try and stop the bleeding from Mr Filidis’s wounds.
“I lifted his shirt to try and help him (and) it was quite obvious he had been stabbed twice,” Hawkins said.
“Now, this is on a suburban street in broad daylight.
“At that point the police cars were rocking up and he slowly closed his eyes and passed away.”
Mr Filidis was a local in the area who had been doing his daily walk to the bus stop.
Hawkins said he was devastated for Mr Filidis and his family and angry that the “innocence had been taken out of our street.”
“I had a front-row seat to watch that family’s life change forever,” he said.
Hawkins has strongly backed calls for a tightening of knife laws and an immediate ban on machetes. He said the ban needed to be Australia-wide.
“I am just sick of the red tape bullsh*t. Just get it done,” he said.
“Let’s just get this city feeling safe again.”
