A hiking content creator has revealed the terrifying moment a naked man leapt out in front of her during a peaceful trail walk in Melbourne’s southeast.
Bec Cliffe, 28, was walking through bushland in Braeside Park on Monday afternoon when a man aged in his 20s or 30s approached her while he was completely nude just before 1pm.
“I heard footsteps kind of at some of the bushes behind me and I turned around to look and noticed there was a man standing in the bush completely naked – you could see everything,” she told the Herald Sun.
“He was just sitting there fully nude, watching me … it was like he wanted me to see him.
“He proceeded to come closer towards me and he sat down about 10m away from me.
“I was just standing there shaking and shocked and I really didn’t know what to do.”
Footage a terrified Ms Cliffe captured while she was filming content for her hiking social media accounts captured the man looking towards her.
“He wasn’t trying to hide,” she said.
Ms Cliffe said she then rushed back to the carpark where she locked herself inside her vehicle and made two calls to police, but officers never showed up to arrest the man.
She said she waited for police to arrive for more than an hour before going home, but an officer called her more than two hours after the ordeal.
“How do we keep ourselves safe when the police are too under-resourced to come and attend?” she said.
“It happened in broad daylight in the middle of a public park and, on a nice day on the school holidays with family and children around.”
Ms Cliffe described the nude offender as a man aged in his 20s or 30s with a medium build and short, dark brown hair.
He did not appear to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or struggling with mental health issues.
It is unclear whether he confronted other visitors at the park.
Ms Cliffe said women should be able to enjoy nature and bushland without the potential threat of men lurking in bushes.
“It’s definitely not all men, but it’s just it’s always men,” she said
Ms Cliffe had been filming videos for her hiking social media account, @hikingbec, where she posts recommendations for walking trails and waterfalls, when the man appeared.
A Victoria Police spokesman said police had received a report of a man exposing himself about 12.50pm.
The incident is being investigated.
