Witnesses have described seeing plumes of smoke in the moments after a near-fatal motorcycle crash in another collision causing traffic chaos on the Monash Freeway.

All outbound lanes are closed and only one inbound lane is open after a motorcyclist crashed into a car between Wellington and Springvale roads.

The force of the crash left debris and fuel strewn across four outbound lanes and four inbound lanes at Wheelers Hill.

It is understood a motorcyclist slammed into the rear of a BYD car heading outbound about 12.47pm on Saturday afternoon.

An accompanying motorcyclist, understood to have been riding in tandem, was arrested by police at the scene.

Huge delays remain for motorists heading in and out of the city.

Witness Aaron claimed to have seen two motorcycles travelling at excessive speeds before the crash up ahead.

He said he saw smoke billowing from the scene before stopping to assist first responders.

“Two motorcycles came roaring past, then up ahead a bit of smoke… something was on fire,” he told the Herald Sun.

“The fireys pulled up. I just stopped and waited for police and told them what I saw.

“They were absolutely flying. It’s ridiculous, it’s crazy.”

He said the motorcycle was obliterated as a result.

He said the rider was being attended to by paramedics and was unsure of their condition.

“One motorbike was in a million pieces over the whole freeway,” he added.

Photos from the scene show firefighters and paramedics attending to the body in the right lane of the freeway.

Traffic authorities are urging motorists to use the Princes Highway, Ferntree Gully and Stud roads.

The second rider was arrested by police at the scene and will be interviewed this afternoon.

Victoria Police said the rider was in a life-threatening condition.

Anyone who witnessed the collision, has CCTV/dashcam footage or any other information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
