World-record runner Erchana Murray-Bartlett is on the precipice of smashing her 150th consecutive marathon in her cross-continental run raising awareness for Australia’s extinction crisis.
Murray-Bartlett’s 6330km (or 150 marathon) Tip To Toe Run stretches from Cape York to Melbourne and will come to a close on Monday after 150 days of non-stop running.
Teaming with the Wilderness Society, the professional athlete has tackled the record-breaking marathon of marathons to raise funds and awareness for “the creatures who are running out of time”.
“This country is full to the brim with storytellers who have shared their own stories with us through the lens of their own backyards,” Murray-Bartlett said of her journey.
“Connecting with these people has helped me understand just how important my footprints are and what my responsibilities need to be as an Australian moving forwards.
“Almost 2000 animal and plant species are on Australia’s national threatened species list, including more than 500 threatened animals … imagine an Australia without the koala?
“It’s about as un-Australian as not liking vegemite!”
Murray-Bartlett has been setting a record every day after smashing the previous Guinness World Record for running the most marathons in a row by a woman at Day 107 back in December.
The final leg of her journey will start at the Pillars of Wisdom and will wind up at 6pm after four laps of the Botanical Gardens track, with fans and supporters encouraged to join her for the final steps of the mother of all marathons.
