Footy fans heading to the MCG for the Carlton v Hawthorn clash are set for weather whiplash as Melbourne delivers both summer heat and downpour on Thursday.
Temperatures were projected to reach a top of 31C in Melbourne by the early afternoon, but an early morning sheet of cloud is likely to keep that maximum at around 29C instead.
City-goers should brace for rain as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) predicts thunderstorms and potentially heavy showers to hit Melbourne between 11am and 5pm.
There is also a chance of “uncomfortable” gusty winds during the afternoon.
But Blues and Hawks supporters are looking to make a chance escape from the downpour, with a break in rainfall projected while fans take their seats around 7pm.
Meteorologist Lincoln Trainor said the rainy weather could pause for the start of the game.
“(Afternoon rainfall) might make it a little bit wet at the ‘G initially, but there’s gonna be a break,” he said.
Footy fans should still “have their ponchos and umbrellas at the ready”, Mr Trainor said, as a southerly change pushes through and brings a risk of evening storms as the game wraps up.
“As that change comes through, around 8.30pm we could start to see some showers increasing and some more storms from 9pm onwards as well,” Mr Trainor said.
Temperatures are looking to keep around 24C throughout the game.
It marks the start of a chillier autumn week in Melbourne, with a top of just 20C on Friday and showers.
“It’s going to be a cloudy, miserable day (on Friday),” Mr Trainor said.
While autumn may not have “officially broken”, a “consistent autumn signal” will stick around for the next five days, Mr Trainor said, keeping temperatures in the low 20s with showers and light southerly winds.
