It is understood the incident occurred just metres away from a car wash under the carparking complex north of the shopping centre.

Staff at the car wash told the Herald Sun they had closed for business at about 5pm and were unaware of the incident on Sunday night.

Uniformed officers and security guards were seen pouring into Broadmeadows Central throughout the morning.

The incident at Broadmeadows came as a man underwent surgery after his hand was almost cut off in a horrifying machete robbery at a shopping centre in Melbourne’s southwest.

He was pushed to the ground before one of his alleged attackers pulled out a machete and struck his forearm.

The offenders then stole the victim’s phone as they fled the scene.

A police statement said the victim sustained “serious injuries” in the attack and was “taken to hospital for treatment”.

Witnesses reported seeing blood everywhere and the man’s hand barely attached.

It was reported the victim underwent surgery on Sunday at the Royal Melbourne Hospital to amputate the lower part of his damaged arm, but on Monday its was clarified the arm was not amputated.

Fed up and demanding answers, Hobsons Bay mayor Daria Kellander on Monday called out the Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan for rising rates of crime in her community.

The incident was the final straw for Cr Kellander, who told the Herald Sun Ms Allan needed to do more to protest residents in the Altona Meadows community.

“It’s not good enough — do your job, do better,” Cr Kellander said of Ms Allan

“It’s not something that normally happens, it’s horrific.”

Allan: No change to machete ban timeline

The attack is the latest in a series of machete incidents at Melbourne shopping centres this year.

The infamous machete brawl between rival gang members at Northland shopping centre in May triggered the Allan government to fast track the state’s machete ban, which will come into effect on September 1.

Ms Allan on Monday described the attacks as “horrific” but defended waiting another six weeks to outlaw the dangerous weapons as she returned from leave on Monday.

“The start of September was identified as the safest and quickest way, based on the advice of Victorian Police, to get those dangerous weapons off our streets,” she said.

Ms Allan acknowledged that the terrifying incident in which the recent attacks were an escalation.

“This is the attack that we saw on the weekend was just horrific,” she said.
