Footage captured by eagle eyed Victorians began circulating on social media just after 6.50am, with videos showing sightings all the way from near Mt Buller down to Brighton.

Witnesses expressed their shock at seeing the remarkable light display, turning to social media to confirm the sightings.

“Did anyone else see something falling from the sky this morning or am I just seeing things? Bright light with sparks from the tail or back of it,” asked one witness.

Another wrote the following underneath a video of the alleged space junk, “Driving to Mount Buller and there’s something falling from the sky! Does anyone know what it is?”

It comes as Victorians were also treated to a remarkable sight earlier this month, when a “huge” meteor lit up the sky.

Meteor spotted in Melbourne skies

One video shared online, taken from Clayton in Melbourne’s southeast, showed the meteor descend across the dark sky before burning bright and disappearing.

Associate Professor of Cultural Astronomy at the University of Melbourne Duane Hamacher previously told the Herald Sun there is more space junk, or debris from human-made objects, filling up space.

“We’re filling the space above earth with (space junk) and what goes up will eventually come down,” he said.

“But the rate of natural meteors is pretty constant.”
