Homicide Squad detectives have released CCTV footage of a man mysteriously killed in Dandenong last week in a plea for public help.

Mysterious Dandenong death

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the mysterious death of a 52-year-old Alexandra man found by a passerby in Dandenong with severe head injuries last week.

Police have released footage in the hopes it will lead to answers after the man was found dead on the side of 5th Avenue at around 7am on Saturday, March 1.

The man had been staying in a Dandenong motel with his wife when he got up to go for a walk at around 2am on Friday, 28 February and failed to return.

The late night walk was not out of the ordinary for the man who had a permanent limp and suffered from constant leg cramps and often went for walks to alleviate the pain.

He was reported missing by his wife when she first realised he had not returned.

Police said they have footage of the man at 2.11am, the last known footage of him alive, and there is also CCTV of him passing strangers during the walk.

Homicide Squad detective Rob Nazaretian said they want to hear from anyone who saw the man that morning.

“If you were one of those people in the area at the time or you have CCTV or dashcam footage which has not already been provided to police, please, we encourage you to come forward now,” he said.

They have also released CCTV of the man leaving the hotel at 2am and from earlier in the evening when he leaves and returns from a walk at 6.57pm and 7.43pm hoping it will lead to information.

Det Nazaretian said they had been unable to establish what happened to the man.

“At this point in time investigators have been unable to definitively establish the circumstances which led to this man’s death not discounting the possibility of a physical assault or some other cause,” he said

Anyone who witnessed anything, has CCTV, dashcam footage or any other information that could assist investigators is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
