Four teenage girls, including three 13-year-olds, roll stolen car in Rooding St, Brighton

Brighton locals have been left stunned after watching four teenage girls call on each other to “finish the drinks” after rolling a stolen car in a residential street in Melbourne’s southeast.

Four teenage girls, including three 13-year-olds, have been arrested after the stolen car they were travelling in smashed into two parked vehicles before rolling in a suburban street in Melbourne’s southeast.

Emergency services were called to reports a black Subaru Forester had collided with two cars before rolling on to its roof in Rooding St in Brighton about 9.45pm on Monday.

Witnesses said the car was speeding before the accident and the occupants tried to flee the scene.

Bottles of vodka were reportedly in the stolen car.

Victoria Police said the teenage girls were arrested after trying to flee on foot.

“Four occupants fled on foot but were arrested a short time later,” a Victoria Police spokeswoman said.

The occupants included three 13-year-old girls and one 17-year-old girl.

The Subaru had been stolen from Rosstown Rd in Carnegie earlier on Monday evening, police said.

Sarah Cavalier was attempting to sleep off jet lag on Monday night following a European trip when she heard an “almighty crash” outside her bedroom window.

Running on five hours of sleep in two days, Ms Cavalier ran outside to help when she witnessed the group of teens attempting to flee the wreckage.

“I came out here and then literally the car was sideways across the road,” she told the Herald Sun on Tuesday morning.

“They’d hit my car, then hit the neighbour’s car in front and they were going so fast that they literally mounted that car and just flipped over.

“I rushed back inside to put some shoes on because there was glass everywhere and as soon as I came back out, that’s when they were all getting out of the car and just bolting up the road and I thought ‘oh this isn’t a car crash, this is a crime scene’.”

The MamaMag editor and mother of two said she watched in shock as “little girls”, younger than her 15-year-old daughter, fled the scene.

“They were yelling ‘where’s my phone’ and ‘oh quick, finish the drinks’ before they ran off,” Ms Cavalier added.

“These girls are a year or two below my daughter and to actually consider that’s something she could have done a year or two ago, that’s just ridiculous.

“It was a Monday night, it’s not school holidays anymore, and where are they getting all the alcohol?”

When asked what her message would be to the parents of the alleged offenders, Ms Cavalier said to “pay more attention”.

“They shouldn’t be behaving like that, it’s shocking,” she said.

She added the community had noticed an increase in theft-related crimes recently.

“In the next street up we’ve had people in people’s front yards, trying to steal cars,” she said.

“I had a couple of what looked like 16-year-old boys in my front yard in December … my security light came on, so they buggered off.

“Everyone around here has got twice as many cameras now because we’re trying to stay really vigilant.”

Earlier, Sarah told Channel 7’s Sunrise the girls could have easily been killed in the accident.

“There’s a massive power pole on one side (of the street), and a tree on the other,” she said.

“If they had hit that pole, there would have been somebody dead for sure.”

The owner of the other car involved in the smash, Rodney Apcar, shared Ms Cavalier’s sentiment that not enough was being done to curb youth crime in Brighton — and Victoria more broadly.

“It’s not being treated as seriously as it should be,” he said.

“I think the bail laws are just waffle (and) they aren’t strong enough.

“They are out on the street again hours after all this happened.”

The Brighton retiree said the blame should not be put on the parents of youth offenders.

“When I was young, my parents didn’t know what I got up to,” he added.

On local crime, Mr Apcar agreed things had gotten worse recently, causing him to install security cameras at the front of his house.

“I sleep right near the front window so I’m more worried about my cars,” he said.

“I have two parked inside the front gate but the one parked on the street that was hit also had a steering wheel lock to deter people.”

Local Liberal MP James Newbury also attended the scene of the crash on Tuesday morning to speak to media and check in on Rooding St residents.

Mr Newbury slammed the Allan government, saying he believed someone would “have to be killed” for the government to take notice.

“It is a revolving door in Victoria,” he told the Herald Sun.

“The sun wasn’t even up and the alleged offenders were already out.

“If this had happened in the day, someone would have been killed.”

He added Brighton residents were fed up with witnessing similar crimes “again and again”.

“In my community there is not a day that goes by where you don’t see some type of vicious grime, violent crime, or dangerous crime,” Mr Newbury said.

“This incident was particularly dangerous in that the car was speeding down a very small street and the impact on two adjacent cars has basically written them off.”

The teenagers have been ordered to face the Children’s Court at a later date.
