Myer is channelling its famous Jen Hawkins era, after signing another former Miss Universe to showcase its new season campaign.

Maria Thattil, a social rights campaigner, model, actor and influencer, is the fresh new face fronting the department store giant’s latest spring summer collections.

It is a full circle moment for the former Miss Universe Australia, with Thattil first working the beauty counters and as a team manager at Myer’s Bourke St Mall in Melbourne while she was completing her applied science and psychology university studies more than a decade ago.

“To get to work with Myer who are culture defining and iconic is so exciting and special to me,” Thattil, 31, said.

“What my experience was growing up as an Australian who is a daughter of immigrants in this country is people who looked like me didn’t often see themselves represented in the media, on TV, or even as the beauty standard or what’s fashionable. It didn’t include people like me. So when we start to see ourselves represented in these spheres it does change a way a generation of people think ‘hey this is what Australia looks like’.

“When you think of Myer you think of the Aussie family, the Aussie ‘it’ girl, the Aussie guy, so when you see a woman of colour who is maybe on the shorter side and doesn’t fit certain stereotypes of what you think the quintessential Aussie looks like, I think that is long overdue. “Because we don’t just have one face. The time has come to show the many different faces of Australia and that’s why I’m so proud to be one of those faces and to get to work with Myer.”

Always on the go, Thattil said she is loving the pastel colourways of the new season, saying a simple fashion hack to elevate an outfit from day to night is kicking off the sneakers for a simple white pump, or adding an oversized blazer to a dress or statement accessories.

“There are so many spring trends I am loving and Myer has always been my go-to place,” Thattil said returning to Myer’s Bourke St for a Herald Sun photo shoot wearing a one piece denim look from Levi’s and a pink Country Road set from the new season collections.

“We are still seeing a lot of denim, and things that are a bit preppy and elevated which I am loving.”

Thattil will feature in Myer across the season, producing social content and hosting events including the Myer Precious Metal Gala event held last month.
