Eddie McGuire has given his blessing to a revival of popular TV format Who Wants to be a Millionaire? — with one catch.
Host of the program for 25 years, McGuire said he’s not surprised to hear reports that the iconic format is set for a return on Network 10.
He said he’d like to see a left field person chosen for the hosting hot seat.
“I always said it was a hiatus, not the end,’’ McGuire told the Herald Sun.
“It’s one of the most successful television shows around the world and spawned an Academy Award winning movie. It’s such a joyous show and to me it was only a matter of time.
“I just hope if it comes back it’s done well. It might be Sam Pang hosting, who knows.
“There’s been a whole lot of different people in these roles. Traditionally it has not been a game show host and I was a surprise choice when I did it. It’s not a quiz show and the host gets to play around so I hope whoever gets it will have great fun.”
Speculation has emerged that it could be a female choice.
Other possibilities include former Studio 10 host Tristan MacManus, ex Channel 9 host Liz Hayes, or comedian Dave Hughes.
McGuire fronted a new version called Millionaire Hot Seat from 2009 and it was replaced by Tipping Point Australia hosted by Todd Woodbridge last year.
Ten has brought back Deal or No Deal which airs at 6pm weeknights with Grant Denyer.
The network declined to comment but TV blog TV Blackbox has reported that casting is complete with the show expected to return as a series of primetime Millionaire specials, airing around other key programming on the network.
