Drivers to pay peak hour tolls on West Gate Tunnel: See your commute mapped

Taxpayers forked out more than $4bn to fund the West Gate Tunnel. This is how much citybound motorists will cough up to drive through it during the morning peak. See the toll points on our interactive map.

Most commuters using the West Gate Tunnel will pay about $4 a trip, with drivers encouraged to avoid the weekday morning crush through the introduction of Victoria’s first peak hour toll.

Between the hours of 7am and 9am on Monday to Friday the new “AM peak” toll will add more than $6 to the price of a city-bound journey through the tunnel by a car, and an extra $10 for vans and utes.

There will also be peak and off-peak tolls for trucks, with the price of night-time travel significantly cheaper in a bid to shift traffic away from busy periods.

But weekend travel will be free for the whole of January to say thank you to Victorians for their patience during construction — saving truck drivers hundreds of dollars and families who do a return trip on Saturdays and Sundays more than $70.

Transurban group executive of operations, Dave Clements, said the initiative was “our way of saying thank you to everyone” and would also encourage more motorists into the tunnel in its early weeks.
“We hope people will come and try the tunnel and learn more about the new way to move between the city and Melbourne’s west.,” he said.

As well as variable prices at different times of the day, the new motorway will cost more for trucks and for larger semi-trailers.

A truck-only toll point has been built into the widened West Gate Freeway, between Millers Rd and Williamstown Rd, meaning heavy vehicles will choose their most efficient route regardless of whether they use the tunnel, the West Gate Bridge, or new ramps that lead to the Port of Melbourne.

As well as toll points in the tunnels, and the AM toll points at city exits at Dynon Rd, the Wurundjeri Way Extension, and Footscray Rd, there will be a fourth toll point at new ramps to Hyde St in Yarraville.

That route is primarily designed to be used by trucks, but can be used by any motorist for the same price as a trip through the tunnel — about $4 for a car.

Similarly to CityLink tolls, prices for the West Gate Tunnel will rise every quarter.

This means that from January 1, a one-way off-peak trip through the West Gate Tunnel for cars will rise from $4.09 to $4.13, or from $19.78 to $19.99 for trucks during the day.

Motorists with a Linkt toll account, which is used on CityLink, don’t have to do anything before travelling through the new tunnel.

Temporary passes are also available for purchase for infrequent travellers, while those without either of option will get a toll invoice that has additional fees.

Opposition spokesperson for public transport Matthew Guy called the hefty tolls Labor’s “Grand Theft Auto” as he blasted the government over its free-month “gimmick”.

“The project is late, it’s $6bn over budget, it’s the highest tolls in the state and we’re told whoopdedoo we should give the government a pat on the back,” he said.

“Victorians are going to have a Christmas gutful of a government that is promising to deliver projects on time and on budget like the Suburban Rail Loop but then getting the actuality of the West Gate Tunnel – new infrastructure but widely over budget – and we’re footing the bill.

“And so are our kids.”

Mr Guy called the promise of free weekend travel on the new roadway during January a “gimmick” that would leave Victorians with a “Christmas hangover”.

He also raised concerns about access to freeways, saying congested roads in growth areas had become a massive issue.

“We don’t oppose new freeways, we don’t oppose new railways but the problem is access,” he said.
