Comanchero bikie Richard Ene has appeared in court wearing handcuffs after he was accused of putting two prison officers in hospital in an alleged maximum security attack.
The Herald Sun has been told Ene assaulted the workers last week during a high-security escort after a court hearing relating to the 2019 murder of gangland figure Mitat Rasimi.
On Wednesday, Ene beamed into Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via video link from maximum security Barwon Prison wearing prison greens and handcuffs after he was charged with assaulting a custodial officer on duty.
The court heard CCTV would form part of the case against Ene.
His matter was adjourned to June 18.
The Herald Sun understands officers were removing his leg restraints when the powerfully built Ene allegedly struck them.
Two of them were injured and taken to hospital but were later discharged.
The SESG members were forced to restrain Ene with OC spray and use of batons.
Ene was transferred to Barwon on the weekend over his suspected involvement in a succession of jailhouse incidents in recent weeks.
The 29-year-old was transferred out of Port Phillip Prison in recent weeks amid concern about his violent behaviour and efforts to incite other inmates to attack staff.
On March 15, he allegedly bashed two officers and stomped on their heads in the Exford unit of the Metropolitan Remand Centre at Ravenhall.
Ene is believed to have lashed out at four specialist officers from the security and emergency services group as they arrived back at Barwon Prison, near Geelong.
A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman confirmed two officers were taken to hospital as a precaution after last week’s violence.
“Corrections Victoria takes all assaults very seriously and refers them to Victoria Police for investigation. Any prisoner responsible for injuring a prison officer faces significant consequences, including having to serve extra time in prison,” the spokeswoman said.
Ene is awaiting sentencing over the shooting murder of Rasimi, who was fatally wounded in his car in a Dandenong ambush.
He was the getaway driver for triggerman and fellow Comanchero Laiseni Kakato.
