Wild footage has emerged of an out-of-control car travelling on its side before slamming into an innocent driver at a northern suburbs intersection.
A dark-coloured Kia was seen barrelling down Gilbert Rd in Preston before it careered into a car waiting at the Regent St intersection about 11.30pm on Tuesday night.
Sparks fly as the Kia — which was reportedly stolen — travels on its right side before it crashes into the back of the car and rolls in a nearby park.
The CCTV, captured from the Melbourne Skin Boutique, then shows the Kia’s car tire rolling through the intersection moments after.
The second vehicle, which appears to be a Toyota sedan, then exits the intersection before emergency services arrive.
The occupants of that car, understood to be two 23-year-old women, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
Police on Wednesday confirmed the driver of the Kia was fighting for his life.
“Investigators have been told a black Kia was headed south along Gilbert Road when it was involved in a collision with another vehicle,” a statement read.
“That car was pushed off the road and hit a fence while the Kia hit two other cars that were slowing or stopped for lights at the Regent Street intersection. The Kia then left the road and rolled in a nearby park.”
Witnesses say the noise from the crash was significant.
“Just heard a big bang. Just super loud. Sounded like a bomb went off,” one woman told reporters on Wednesday.
“It’s nuts, it really is. It’s quite scary. If that had happened during the course of a normal working day, the consequences could have been a lot worse, for sure,” another local said.
Police are continuing to investigate.
