Two-way proves too hard for TRC

TOOWOOMBA Regional Council says a project to convert Neil St into a two-way street has proved “more complex than anticipated” which has delayed the works.

TOOWOOMBA Regional Council says a project to convert Neil St into a two-way street has proved "more complex than anticipated" which has delayed the works.

The project was to be completed by April but council now says it will be finished in June.

The exact date will be confirmed in coming weeks once line-marking, electrical works and traffic management have been finalised to allow the conversion in the safest possible manner.

Infrastructure committee chairman Cr Carol Taylor said council had completed work at the intersection of Neil and Herries Sts including installation of new conduits, new traffic signals and an asphalt overlay at the intersection.

Once that work is completed, crews will finish works outside the Toowoomba Bus Station and construct a centre pedestrian refuge to allow a safe crossing at the Bell St Mall.

A single white centre line will separate traffic, with vehicles being able to turn across the white line to enter driveways or car parks. Vehicles will not be allowed to cross the white line to perform a U-turn.

Victoria St will be converted to two-way traffic later this year.

The project is part of a wider ring road envisioned by council which includes Chalk Dr, the Outer Circulating Road, and Victoria, Hume, Herries, Clifford and Russell Sts which it says will improve traffic efficiency in the CBD.
