EMERGENCY services crews are at the scene of a two-car crash on the New England Highway north of Crows Nest.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokeswoman said crews were alerted to the crash about 1.45pm.

The crash site is 11km north of Crows Nest and the highway is closed in both directions while crews work to treat the people in the cars.

One person was trapped inside one of the vehicles and fire crews had cut off the roof of the car to gain access.

Paramedics including Critical Care paramedics are treating four patients at the scene and it is believed a rescue helicopter has been tasked to the site.
