Lured by the prospect of sampling dozens of dishes from around the world in a buffet-style format, thousands of curious diners have already seized the opportunity to check out the latest section to open at the Twin City Hotel.
Formerly Sunland Plaza shopping centre in Thuringowa Central, the Star Hotels Group’s $50 million Twin City Hotel is a contender for Australia’s largest pub, progressively opening burger joint The Garage, Star Liquor’s largest warehouse, a gaming room, Herveys Cafe, and the Downtown Bar and Kitchen, over the past year.
Arguably the jewel in the hotel’s crown, The Buffet threw open its doors last Thursday, welcoming a stampede of more than 4500 hungry patrons in less than a week.
With seating for over 400 guests, The Buffet has over 80 dishes, ranging from modern Aussie classics, Asian, Indian, Italian, to an extensive dessert bar, and the fan favourite Sushi train.
Twin City Hotel general manager Chris McNeill was delighted by the overwhelming amount of support they had received from the community for the hotel’s newest addition.
“It has been a very long process to get this section open so we are relieved and excited to have finally opened the doors,” Mr McNeill said.
“All of the positive feedback from our guests has made the team very proud and feel that their hard work has paid off. You pay at the door, grab a plate and go for it.”
Mr McNeill said they had made sure to cater for diners with differing dietary requirements, with each dish labelled accordingly.
Prices vary, depending on the day, time, and membership status, with adults charged $33 – $43, Seniors $25 – $37, and kids $19 – $25.
The Buffet has been a godsend for NQ diners pining for a buffet to fill the void left by the Sizzler Restaurant chain, while also kickstarting an employment bonanza for Townsville residents.
“We have recently employed another 55 team members to open The Buffet, we now have just over 150 team members in total at Twin City and still growing,” he said.
Bookings are now being taken for a festive Christmas Day lunch featuring Australian seafood, traditional Christmas trimmings, a carvery station with turkey, ham and roast meats, desserts, washed down with a 3hr beer, wine, and soft drink beverage package.
There are hotel sections still yet to be unlocked, with Mr McNeill revealing that their 100-seat cocktail bar, called the Plaza Bar, would feature in their upcoming Melbourne Cup celebrations.
Looking to capture a slice of the gelato market on the western side of Townsville, Nancy’s Gelato shop was also coming soon.
Live music fans are keeping a close watch on the hotel’s Music Hall, which was confirmed to be opening in 2025, with an estimated capacity exceeding 1000 guests.
