A TRUCK driver had a lucky escape when his semi-trailer rolled off a major highway, closing it for more than four hours this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident on the New England Highway at The Summit about 2.30am with reports the cab had rolled off the road with a trailer across the bitumen.

The truck, which had been loaded with meat, blocked both lanes of the New England Highway for hours before one lane was opened to traffic about 7.10am.

Another truck travelling in the area came to screeching halt, just bumping the rolled vehicle.

The driver had managed to get himself out of the cab which was down an embankment.

Paramedics assessed him at the scene and transported him to Toowoomba Hospital with no obvious injuries.

The man was in a stable condition.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews contained a diesel spill at the scene with Transport and Main Roads called in to deliver sand over the leak.

Heavy haulage vehicles righted the truck and the scene was cleared by about 7.30am.
