With many deciding to give up alcohol or drink less as their New Years resolution and others attempting Dry January, a Townsville radio presenter is sharing her sobriety story in the hopes of inspiring others to put their health and wallet first in 2025.

Triple M breakfast presenter Kate Jeboult decided to go sober back in October 2023 and she says she hasn’t looked back, hoping to show the change in culture towards those choosing not to drink.

Stats from Alcohol and Drug Foundation show a rise in people taking part in the ‘sober-curious’ lifestyle, with many people now more accepting of others drinking less or choosing to go alcohol-free.

Non-alcoholic drinks options are also seeing a rise in popularity and availability at bottleshops and supermarkets across the country.

“It is so common now (to be sober),” she said.

“I feel like every month that passed by it’s becoming more common. When I gave up drinking 15 months ago, I was the only person I knew that wasn’t drinking and now there’s more people that are talking about not drinking.”

Ms Jeboult said her relationship with alcohol has changed over her life and she reached a point where it was affecting her everyday life.

Having to wake up 4am for Triple M’s Cliffo and Kate show, Ms Jeboult says she wasn’t feeling the best health-wise when doing early morning starts.

“At the time I was 40 years old when I decided to go sober. There wasn’t a massive moment or a rock bottom as the reason to my decision,” she said.

“In my 20s I was a binge-drinker, I used to go out, drink a lot. The culture of being in your 20s there was a lot of drinking involved.”

“My thirties, I got more stuck into wine, there was stress involved with parenting and my career, so I used it as a crutch …”

Ms Jeboult said as the hangovers started to hit harder, she decided it was time for a change.

“I found it to be so exhausting,” she said.

“The hangovers started to get worse and more painful. I found in my thirties I started to suffer a lot of anxiety and at the time thought I could get rid of it by drinking, but it was the drinking that was the big problem.”

Ms Jeboult said like many Australians, her social life was based around drinking.

Attempting to give up alcohol a few times, she decided to finally stop for good in 2023, with the help of apps, distractions and taking up new hobbies.

She said she began to feel her energy levels increase and felt overall more happy and healthy after choosing to quit, and said she felt better when spending time with her family.

“I threw myself into Quit lit, which is reading books, articles and listening to podcast about being sober to remind myself why I was doing it,” she said.

Kate’s top tips for going sober and drinking less:

– Be prepared. Swap out your regular drinks for alcohol-free versions.

– Immerse yourself in Quit lit; podcasts, books, articles and doing research about what alcohol does to your body.

– Don’t feel like you have to explain yourself.

– Keep busy, Go for walks, knit, run, swim, bake, do puzzles.

– Treat yourself. Take what you would have spent on alcohol and buy yourself something nice.
