Cops rescue woman from burning home

Police bodycam and CCTV footage have revealed the moment a woman was rescued from her burning home on Boxing Day, as police appeal to three people near the scene to come forward.

The footage shows a man riding a bike at 2.40am, a woman walking away from Mooney Street on Tippett Street, and a man riding on an e-scooter on Tippett Street toward Mooney Street just before 3am on December 26, 2024.

It is believed the fire started at 3am the same morning.

Detective inspector Damien Smith said the individuals in the footage are not considered suspects, but police are appealing for them to come forward.

“We have no reason to believe these people are suspects or persons of interest in relation to this investigation, we would like to speak to them because we’d like to know what they may have seen,” he said.

Bodycam footage was also released showing an officer rescuing a woman from the burning home.

The 53-year-old woman remains in a Brisbane hospital and an 83-year-old man in Townsville, both are in a critical condition.

A third man who was injured has since been discharged.

Inspector Smith said the investigation remains ongoing.

“We still believe an accelerant has been used due to the nature of the fire and the way it spread,” he said.

“We believe the fire started outside near the premises, and some sort of accelerant has caused the fire to spread very quickly to items underneath the house.”

“Unfortunately the occupants of the house have lost everything, the entire house and its contents have been destroyed.”

A GoFundMe for the family has raised more than $21,000 since it was created on Friday December 27.

The family are still pleading for information regarding four pets missing from the property, including a bull terrier, jack russell, and two cats.

Two animals, an elderly jack russell and a cream cattle dog, have been located.
