Townsville man discovers rusty nail in ALDI packaged meal

Supermarket chain ALDI has confirmed that it is investigating after a rusty nail was allegedly discovered in a packaged meal sold in Townsville.

Supermarket chain ALDI has confirmed that it is investigating after a rusty nail was allegedly discovered in a packaged meal sold in Townsville.

A Townsville man identifying himself as Bryan Brettig warned ALDI shoppers to “beware” after he took to social media, saying he’d discovered the 3 centimetre-long nail in his $15 Slow Cooked Beef Cheeks, part of the supermarkets “Ready, Set... Cook!” range of meal kits.

In a social-media post, he said he was fortunate that there was no damage to his mouth and he did not swallow the rusty foreign object, saying it “could have been nasty”.

Mr Brettig, who was contacted for comment, said he had reported the alarming discovery to ALDI’s head office and said that he would not be buying the product ever again.

He subsequently noted that the supermarket company had responded quickly and viewed the matter seriously.

“Where the nail came from and how it got into the product is a complete mystery.”

ALDI confirmed that it was in contact with Mr Brettig about the allegation and were investigating.

“We always encourage customers to provide any feedback to ALDI directly via our help centre.”

The company said it viewed the discovery as an isolated incident.

“ALDI has not received any other complaints of a similar nature.”

ALDI operates a single store in Townsville in Thuringowa.

ALDI confirmed on Friday that a second store would open in northern Townsville in the coming months.

“We are excited to bring our unique shopping experience to Burdell towards the end of this year,” an ALDI spokesperson said.

“We will update the community as our plans progress.”
