Property offence charges, Townsville

A 17-year-old Vincent boy accused of ramming police on two separate occasions has been arrested alongside a 23-year-old Garbutt man after an alleged crime spree across Townsville.

Police allege the pair is linked to a string of break-ins and property offences targeting homes, businesses, tobacconists, and service stations across the city between December 3, 2024, and January 30, 2025.

It will be alleged the teenager was involved in the ramming of a police vehicle in Garbutt on Wednesday, January 22.

The pair are further accused of stealing a Toyota LandCruiser and Toyota HiLux from a Currajong home on Wednesday, January 29 — before the teen allegedly used the LandCruiser to ram a police car in Garbutt later that day.

The two officers inside the patrol car were unhurt, but their vehicle was damaged.

The HiLux was later found torched in Gulliver, with the 23-year-old man now facing an arson charge.

Townsville Crime Services Group Detective Inspector Jason Shepherd said officers nabbed the duo at an Urqhuart Street address in Currajong on Thursday, January 30, arresting both males as part of a broader crackdown on property crime.

“These arrests highlight the efforts of police to hold property offenders to account on behalf of the Townsville community,” he said.

Acting Superintendent Paul James called it a big win for local police.

“Police are absolutely committed to tackling crime … These results show the dedication of Townsville police to seek justice for victims and do all we can to disrupt offending,” he said.

The 17-year-old faces 25 charges, including robbery, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and burglary — plus 16 more offences on an arrest warrant. He was due in Townsville Children’s Court on Friday

The 23-year-old has been hit with 32 charges, including eight counts of stealing, arson, and receiving stolen property. He was set to face Townsville Magistrates Court on Friday.
