Horror bus crash brings Bruce Highway issue into focus

Investigations into the horrific bus crash that claimed three lives on Sunday are continuing, with police urging anyone who may have witnessed what occurred, particularly one driver, to come forward with any information.

People were left shocked late last week when a Greyhound bus crashed into an SUV towing a caravan on the Bruce Highway in Gumlu south of Home Hill, with the impact forcing the van through the windscreen and into the cabin.

Police say initial investigations show the bus with 33 passengers was travelling north along the highway when it crossed onto the wrong side of the road and struck a LandCruiser station wagon towing a caravan, travelling in the opposite direction.

Authorities are now asking motorists who were nearby, specifically a driver of a white utility who is believed to have been travelling behind the bus prior to the crash, to come forward.

Three people who were on board the bus, a 33-year-old German woman, a 21-year-old German woman and a 56-year-old Townsville woman tragically died at the scene.

The deaths have sparked an outcry across the region, with various political leaders and figures calling for greater funding to address the inadequacies along the stretch of the highway where the incident occurred, including greater anti-fatigue measures like audible lines.

A spokesman for the German Consulate confirmed on Thursday that the German Embassy in Canberra and the German Consulate General in Sydney were providing consular assistance in co-ordination with the local authorities in Australia and Germany.

The driver of the bus, a 51-year-old Townsville man who escaped injury in the crash has been helping police with investigations, along with the driver of the a caravan an 83-year-old Victorian man, who was also uninjured.
