The Mount Louisa walking track will be closed from Monday, April 28, as workers descend on the trail to repair damage caused by February and March’s record-breaking rain.
Townsville City Council says the closure is expected to last “about three weeks”, weather permitting, allowing for heavy machinery to be used safely on the normally busy track.
Acting Mayor Anne-Maree Greaney said disappointed walkers were welcome to explore Townsville’s other scenic walks.
“Most of our walking tracks on Castle Hill are now reopened,” Cr Greaney said.
“There are also great walking and exercise paths along The Strand, Jezzine Barracks, Douglas and the Ross River.”
Magnetic Island is also a good weekend option.
The Mount Louisa walking track was officially opened in 2020 and was touted as a ‘world-class’ alternative to Castle Hill.
It was part of a huge ‘open space’ masterplan for the Mount Louisa bush area that originally included mountain bike trails, bird hides, barbeques, dog off-leash areas and more.
In 2024 the Townsville Bulletinreported on frustration among regular users that council was failing to deliver on the second stage of the Mount Louisa masterplan, which included more walking tracks around the mountain, a road to drive to the summit, a children’s playground, cafe, adventure camp space, and mountain bike trails.
