Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts ignited Townsville’s arts scene last Friday, drawing over 80 art enthusiasts to its vibrant new exhibitions.
The launch highlighted North Queensland’s growing artistic prominence, showcasing compelling sculptural works and weaving processes.
Louise Plint’s Conversations with Nature explores basketry and weaving as a dialogue with nature, highlighting her meticulous fibre work.
Jan Hynes’ Thoughts on the Cross presents interesting wall-based sculptures, exploring the diverse interpretations of a cross through humour and wordplay.
Cross Examine, curated by Hynes and Daniel Qualischefski, features work from the Rockhampton Museum of Art Collection (RMOA) by Ruth Downes, Nora Hanasy, and Carmel Knowles, revealing unexpected connections and playful dialogues with Hynes’ solo exhibition.
Rockhampton Museum of Art director Jonathan McBurnie said he was excited to be partnering with Umbrella to share works from the RMOA Collection.
“It is always exciting to see works in new contexts and how they relate to each other and other works. As former Director of Umbrella Studio Contemporary Arts, I’m very familiar with Jan Hynes’ work, and I’m so pleased that her work will respond to works from our collection, furthering discussions between regional artists and galleries.”
Umbrella invites the community to explore these exhibitions, running until May 4.
