Travellers are being urged to avoid the Hann Highway after underground springs surfaced beneath the dirt road, creating an impassable bog that’s already trapped caravans.
The Kennedy Development Road - locally called the Hann Highway - runs between Hughenden and Lyndhurst, and provides access to Porcupine Gorge.
According to local MP Robbie Katter, the underground springs have turned large sections of the unsealed road into “a deep, boggy mess - impassable by vehicle”.
“Road works crews have not been able to access the site safety and it doesn’t seem that the underground springs are letting up soon, which unfortunately means the road is likely to remain in a poor condition for the foreseeable future,” he said.
The Kennedy Development Road has been closed to through traffic since mid-March due to flood water going over the road in several sections.
On April 15, the condition of the road on the Shire of Flinders road report was updated to: “water over road in multiple locations, wet and boggy impassable gravel section”.
