For those NQ music fans who love guitars, shredding riffs, and massive breakdowns, you’re in for a treat when In Hearts Wake and Australia’s next generation of heavy-hitters ignite mosh pits in Townsville next week.

Formed in 2006, when the average age of its members was 15-years-old, metalcore band In Hearts Wake has grown steadily from under the long shadow cast by fellow Byron Bay band Parkway Drive, to become one of the nation’s leading purveyors of heavy music.

Comprising of vocalist Jake Taylor, guitarists Eaven Dall and Ben Nairne, and drummer Conor Ward, the band released Incarnation last year – their sixth, and arguably most heavy album yet.

Speaking on the eve of their return to Townsville, where they will play at JCU’s Uni Bar on February 7, lead singer Taylor was champing at the bit to get stuck in after their pandemic-induced downtime.

“I feel with the whole two year pandemic stopped us in our tracks from touring overseas, we lost a lot of the momentum that we had built up,” Taylor said.

“Rather than it just being a loss, it was a time to reflect and work on our documentary and work on a soundtrack and just explore other elements of being creative.

“But with a new record coming out of that, it had to be strong and needed to be furious, because we were hungry to get back on the road. I feel like we came back stronger.”

Disinterested in how Incarnation performed on the charts, he said the real proof of success was their crowd numbers, with their last tour around Australia being the “biggest and best to date”, where fans lapped up the new material.

In Hearts Wake is one of Australia’s most environmentally-conscious bands, organising beach clean ups, tree plantings, and fundraising for environmental charities like Sea Shepherd.

“We offset all of what we do and … became the first band to become a carbon-neutral organisation. We’ve got some solar batteries and we try to power stage stuff wherever we can to be self-sufficient,” he said.

“It just felt right to do it, rather than be like a marketing thing … it’s taking accountability.”

The band loves pulling over for swims while touring around Australia, and Taylor said he couldn’t wait to plunge back into Crystal Creek.

The Incarnation tour will also feature Australia’s exciting up and coming bands Ocean Sleeper, Reliqa and Inertia.

With less than 27 tickets available in Townsville, you’ll have to hurry to secure your spot in the pit by visiting the Oztix website.
