When Daniel Leoni went to bed overnight, he had no clue he’d wake up ankle-deep in floodwater just hours later.
His home on Sutton St, Mysterton, was hit hard when flash floods tore through Townsville early Wednesday morning.
It came as a massive shock to Mr Leoni who had checked the water levels before turning in for the night.
At 2am, the water was still at the palm trees by the road, so he went to sleep.
But by 4am, he was jolted awake and found his bedroom underwater.
“I bounced out of bed, landed in water. My room was flooded. I just went, ‘Oh sh*t!’” he said.
He said the floodwater rushed in alarmingly fast, rising nearly 25 centimetres inside his home.
“We’ve been in this house for like seven years now, we’ve been through the 2019 floods, so I was like we know what we’re in for but it’s just crept up so fast this time, the fastest we’ve ever seen it creep up,” he said.
“Our house is most definitely inundated with some sewage water … after this I’m going to have to take a few days off to go to the doctors because I’ve been up to my knees in this water trying to move stuff.”
Mr Leoni said the damage left behind has been devastating, with him estimating losses of at least $10,000.
He said three TVs, an electric scooter, and two vehicles were among the possessions damaged by the water.
Comparing this incident to the February floods, Mr Leoni said this time was far worse because they didn’t have any warning.
He said the water didn’t mange to get inside their house in February either.
“The water was sitting right on our back door last time,” he said.
“I’m worried if we’ll be able to get any assistance this time round because last month during the floods our suburb wasn’t even on the list of places in Townsville where you could get help.”
