The brother of a man allegedly gruesomely murdered in mystery circumstances in the Queensland Outback more than 40 years ago has spoken out as part of Australia’s National Missing Persons Week.

The sombre week was launched in Townsville by the family of Anthony ‘Tony’ Jones six years after the young Western Australian’s disappearance in Hughenden on the Flinders Highway – sometimes referred to as the ‘Highway of Death – in November, 1982.

Tony’s brother Mark, speaking ahead of the NMPW 2024 launch in Townsville on Sunday, urged police investigators throughout Australia to contact the families of the missing persons and “use the availability of the media if they have a message they want to get across”.

“For myself, its been five and a half years since we last heard from the lead detective of the case; we know that it happens,” he said.

“We know that it is difficult for some detectives to face the family when they don’t have good news but we’re asking them to get over that – the rewards are there.”

“Sometimes, just speaking to the family will uncover something that might have been missed and sometimes just putting the story across in a different way can bring about something new.”

Mr Jones said that was true of his brother’s case, “bringing virtually every lead we’ve had over the last 40 years”, including a News Corp article in late 2022 that he said had resulted in fresh leads.

He has long criticised the investigation into the death of his brother, which he believed occurred between November 2 and 5, with Queensland Police Service maintaining the disappearance occurred following an altercation at the then Grand Hotel on the evening of November 12.

Mr Jones, speaking on Friday, said the information, passed to police, helped fill in some of the gaps in a horror picture of Tony’s last moments.

He said his “beaten and bloodied” brother, aged just 20, was seen staggering out the front of the hotel – razed by fire in November 2018 – by two men he believed were responsible for the alleged murder and who are still alive today.

“The two men pursued Tony, found him hiding in a drain, continued to attack him and took him to the (Hughenden) Slaughter Yards.”

Mr Jones said Tony was allegedly put in a pit, doused in fuel and burned alive.

He said that a female witness at an inquest hearing into the disappearance had testified that one of the suspects had confessed to her.

The Coroner ruled in 2002 that Mr Jones had died “at the hands of a person or persons unknown” and reopened the case in 2010 with a date not yet set to deliver the findings.

There is currently a $500,000 reward on offer for information as part of the ongoing investigation.

Mr Jones said questions had to be asked after 14 years.

“Tony’s sister and father have passed away since we learned about critical eyewitnesses, and we are left wondering ‘when it will all end?’.”

A QPS spokesman confirmed on Friday that the coroner had carried out the coronial investigation.

“As such, investigators provide relevant information to the Coroner’s office who, in turn, act as a family liaison and relay information as appropriate,” the spokesman said.

“As the matter remains an active investigation, it would be inappropriate to provide further comment on specific investigative strategies and operational matters.”

The mystery is one of a number of missing person cases being highlighted as part of NMPW 2024.

The Australian Federal Police is this week calling on the public to come forward with new information that could help provide answers to the disappearances.
