The Bureau of Meteorology expects North Queensland’s wet weather to continue on Friday before easing on Saturday.
Following Thursday’s severe weather warning, the Townsville region was drenched by rain, particularly north of the city in Toolakea where 116mm fell.
Toomulla recorded 120mm, Rollingstone 106mm, and Townsville Airport 20.4mm.
While no weather warnings have been issued on Friday morning, the Bureau predicted a high chance (80 per cent) of showers falling in the Townsville region, with the chance of a thunderstorm that was “possibly severe”.
The wet weather was being driven by a low pressure system over northwest New South Wales extends a trough into the interior of Queensland.
“The low pressure system and trough will track slowly eastwards over coming days, bringing a moist airmass, widespread showers and the risk of severe thunderstorms across much of eastern Queensland,” the Bureau said.
“A weak trough is forecast to develop off the Central Coast or Capricornia regions later today and may persist into the weekend while slowly moving south.
“A high in the Tasman Sea will maintain a weak ridge elsewhere over eastern Queensland over the next few days as it slowly moves east.”
On Saturday, the Herbert and Lower Burdekin was expecting a mostly sunny weather with a slight (20 per cent) chance of a shower near the coast in the early morning with a near zero chance of rain elsewhere.
There was also the chance of a thunderstorm in the morning and afternoon.
