Young and old students return to school across Toowoomba

Some Toowoomba school students returned to the classroom today after learning from home for several weeks.

THE youngest and the oldest students returned to the classroom today, with Mary MacKillop Catholic College welcoming back its Prep, Year 1, Year 11 and Year 12 students.

School captains Caitlin Lang and Connor McKerrow were excited to be back at school after a tough time doing school from home.

"I was ready to see my teachers, ready to see my friends, and ready to start learning again," Miss Lang said.

"It was hard not being able to communicate fully with my teachers and friends.

"I had to really rely on myself to get through hard situations sometimes."

Mr McKerrow said he preferred coming to school, although there were some upsides to learning from home.

"The best thing about working from home is waking up right before school starts, chucking a shirt on and getting ready for your lessons," he said.

"The hardest thing was getting a week in and realising you were in for the long haul."

Mary MacKillop principal Chris Gabbett said they had 75 Prep students return to school today, 66 Year 1 students, 30 year 11 students, and eight Year 12 students.

"The slow return to normality is really welcome," Mr Gabbett said.

"I don't think it's right that schools are empty and having kids back at school is our core business.

"I think for some children it will be as equal a shock as it was to go.

"Schools are built on the strength of routine and for a number of students, even though we've maintained that routine online, its not the same as a positive peer group and a positive community."
