A mother-of-two will travel five hours from her town of St George to Toowoomba to participate in the MS Swimathon in honour of her mother who passed away from multiple sclerosis.

Jazmine Rule said she had limited memories of her late mother, who passed away when she was two.

“My mother was only 24-years-old when she passed from MS. I don’t have many memories of her just glimpses of her taking me to the park, or the beach,” she said.

“I’m sure my mother would think it’s great that I’m still getting involved and helping others living with MS.

“My son Leo also loves coming to the event and knows that it’s all for nanny.”

Ms Rule started attending the event in 2012, and in 2016 she was eight months pregnant with her son Leo when she took part and Leo’s been at the MS Queensland event every year since.

This year will be the first year Ms Rule’s newborn daughter Melissa will be joining the family at the event.

Ms Rule is encouraging Toowoomba locals to join her at the MS Swimathon event in March.

MS Queensland executive general manager support impact Daniel Lalor said they were eager to return to Toowoomba after bushfires resulted in the cancellation of the event in 2019.

“It’s great to be able to bring our event back to Toowoomba, the last event we held in the region saw 10 teams and more than 100 people swim and enjoy a fun day out with their families for a good cause,” he said.

“The health and wellbeing of our supporters is our number one priority, so this year we’ve made changes to our events including QR code check in on entry, hand sanitising stations, and increased cleaning for high frequency areas.”

Eight MS Swimathons are occurring across Queensland throughout the year to raise funds for vital services like physiotherapy, exercise therapy, counselling, service co-ordination, phone line and nursing support.

The Toowoomba event will be held at Oakey Aquatic Centre on Saturday, March 6 from 6am to 6pm.
