TOOWOOMBA won't be bringing in the New Year with a bang, after the cancellation of the annual fireworks.

Toowoomba Regional Council environment and community committee chair, councillor Geoff McDonald, said the decision to cancel the fireworks was made because of the current total fire ban, and out of respect for those affected by the recent bushfires locally and around the country.

Instead, the council is organising a light show in conjunction with local emergency services groups.

Cr McDonald said the council hoped to showcase the great work of the emergency services with their machinery and vehicles turning on their lights and sirens, followed by "an unofficial world record rain dance to see if we can crack the drought".

"That'd be a great way to kick off 2020 if we can do that," he said.

He encouraged people to come "ready to dance".

The Toowoomba New Year's Eve celebrations will kick off at Frogs Hollow in Queens Park from 4.30pm on Tuesday, December 31.

Family fun activities will begin at 5pm and the light show involving emergency services will take place at 7.45pm.

"Fireworks have traditionally put a full stop to the night, if you like. This year we'll have something a little different," Cr McDonald said.

Cr McDonald said the New Year's Eve event in Queens Park usually attracted between 8-12,000 people and he was looking forward to seeing a similar turnout this year.
