Why Toowoomba is more at risk to house fires

Toowoomba homes are more likely to be lost to fire than other parts of Queensland. Here’s how to protect yourself.

TOOWOOMBA homes are more at risk to be destroyed by fire than homes in other areas across Queensland.

That is according to a risk profile done by the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.

"There are multiple reasons why some parts of Queensland experience more house fires than others, including the use of fireplaces or heaters in colder locations, the age or style of homes and the number of occupants," a QFES spokeswoman said.

"The risk profile of an area is determined based on an analysis of the number structure fires in Queensland between 1 July 2012 to 30 June 2019.

"The age and style of a home, wood heating, faulty appliances and wiring, electronic devices and unattended cooking can all increase the risk of a fire occurring.

"This is why it is important residents identify potential fire hazards in their home and take appropriate action."

The spokeswoman said there were a number of actions people could take to protect their homes.

"Photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms should be installed in all bedrooms and hallways and on each storey of the home," she said.

"Smoke alarms are lifesaving devices, but they must be maintained. People should test their smoke alarms and clean them to remove built-up dust or other matter that may affect the alarm's performance.

"Tests of smoke alarms can be carried out by using the 'test' button and cleaning should be carried out in line with manufacturer instructions."

The spokeswoman said there was only a small window of time to escape a burning house safely, so it was crucial everyone in the household knows how to make their way out safely and quickly.

"It is why Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) recommends all households develop and maintain a fire escape plan all year round," she said.

"A fire escape plan should clearly outline details such as multiple exit points, the location of spare keys in case locked doors or windows need to be opened quickly, and an agreed meeting place outside the home.

"Home fire safety can be compromised if people do not take the correct precautions and ensure heating appliances are in safe working order. Faulty or poorly maintained electrical equipment, as well as placing flammable materials too close to curtains, bedding or other materials, can cause fires.

"Those using electrical heating appliances should check for fraying, exposed cords and repair or replace damaged appliances to prevent the risk of fires occurring."
