Unilever has announced the creation of the Weis Community Fund as the iconic brand exits production in Toowoomba.

Under the new fund, 25 per cent of the proceeds of the sale of the Toowoomba site will be “provided for the benefit of the community”.

Factory director Keith Head said the fund would ensure the legacy and contribution the factory and its people made to the city would be remembered and celebrated.

Mayor Paul Antonio said while the fund was a positive, “it would never make up for the loss”.

The recipient of the Weis Community Fund will be announced this year.
