A record crowd gathered at this year’s Triple M Mayoral Carols by Candlelight in Queens Park on Sunday to enjoy an evening of pre-Christmas fun.
About 15,000 people turned out to enjoy performances from local artists, catch a glimpse of Santa and watch an incredible fireworks display.
An enthusiastic crowd got into the festive spirit with many sporting Christmas hats and daggy sweaters.
Triple M Darling Downs’ Lee Faulkner, who’s been involved with the carols for more than 20 years, said the turnout was “amazing”.
“Without doubt that was the biggest crowd that I’ve ever seen,” he said.
Among the highlights of the evening Mr Faulkner said was Santa’s “magnificent entrance” onstage in a “custom built sleigh”.
The evening also featured performances from local artists and seasoned performers who were led onstage by the Fibonacci Band.
Mr Faulkner said the event was a “wonderful tradition” that showcases the “incredible talent” of local artists.
“It’s such a joy to look out and see the crowd singing back every single note, every single word,” he said.
This year marked an important milestone in the event’s history – its 70th anniversary.
“Having a celebration of 70 years of keeping a free community based event going, all run by volunteers and all done by local performers I think it’s quite extraordinary,” Faulkner said.
The event also raised money for charities Momentum Mental Health and Loads of Love.
