Toowoomba’s best hairdresser for 2020 revealed

FOR Jason Cherry, the highlight of his 30-year career in hairdressing has been the people he's met sitting on the chair in front of him and the conversations shared.

Mr Cherry, who owns Hair by Design at the Mort Estate shopping complex, was this week named Toowoomba's best hairdresser for 2020 by The Chronicle's readers.

"Since high school it was all I wanted to do … my heart was set on it," he said.

"As a boy from Surat, it was a bit unusual (to become a hairdresser) at the time, but I came to Toowoomba and did pre apprecenticeship course for six months and have been here ever since."

A few years ago Mr Cherry was selected to do a training course at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London, one of the world's top hairdressing schools.

"It was a bit surreal being there for a full week at the academy," he said.

"It was something a boy from the country never thought he'd be doing."

Mr Cherry said he was thankful he had been able to continue operating during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"I'd have gone mental sitting at home all day," he said.
