Toowoomba teen prepares for first solo flight

WHILE most 14 year olds are awaiting their chance to drive, Toowoomba Anglican School student Alex Aiga-Webb has his eyes on a different licence.

WHILE most 14 year olds are awaiting their chance to drive, Toowoomba Anglican School student Alex Aiga-Webb has his eyes on a different licence.

Having passed his solo flying exam, Mr Aiga-Webb will be taking to the skies for his first solo flight on Sunday, the day of his 15th birthday.

"I did my first introductory flight in October - it's always been something I wanted to try," Mr Aiga-Webb said.

"Last year I joined the Australian air force cadets and one of the camps I went to did a flight experience in a light plane - and that's what helped me make up my mind.

"I loved the feeling of accelerating and then lifting up off the ground, it's both calming and exhilarating - "

The feat will make him the second person in the Darling Downs to make the flight at such a young age.

"He's a driven young man with some lofty goals in life - we're incredibly proud of him and the students recognise he has done some amazing things," TAS deputy head Gordon Oldham said.
